Authentic Nova Scotia Art for sale
with a focus on our South Shore coastal views

Bringing Nova Scotia into your Home

My love for my home province of Nova Scotia is expressed in my paintings. The ocean is a constant source of inspiration because everywhere I look there is a scene or subject matter that begs to be photographed or painted. I always pause to take in a coastal scene as it is worth a second look. Our tourists are impressed with their visit here but we are lucky enough to enjoy it all the time. Perhaps you will select a piece to give as a gift for a special occasion like a house-warming or birthday. Or maybe you will choose a painting or reproduction from my website that will remind you of your time spent here in this special place.

About Laurie

My background

I retired early from the classroom in order to teach art classes and paint full time. With a varied teaching career, extensive art training and over twenty-six years experience of full-time painting, I enjoy offering drawing and painting lessons to adults who have been waiting for their own free time or retirement so they can start painting. I conduct art classes in my studio classroom in my home as well as private instruction and I can be booked by phone or email to present a workshop in another location.

I really enjoy having a regular "Painting Day" or a several day "Painting Retreat" with fellow artists - or working on a commission - or especially on a painting of my own choosing- as long as there is a brush in my hand!

My art

Without a doubt, the ocean often finds its way into my paintings even if it is just in the background. My focus on water as a source of inspiration is due to the ever-changing variety and contrast I find in the ocean and my respect for it as a source of both danger and pleasure. I paint colourful renderings of florals, boats and people whether on the coast or in city scenes. My usual subjects are the coves, wharves and people commonly found in the small coastal villages near my family home in Hubbards. But I am equally intrigued with buildings and street scenes in nearby Halifax.

I love colour so even if I am drawing, I may choose a prismastick or a coloured pencil. Watercolour is more challenging because it can interact with you in ways not always anticipated. When toned down, acrylics are my favourite because I work quickly and they cooperate better. Working on canvas with either oil or acrylic is satisfying because I can feel the canvas as it moves under my brush. I can tackle larger projects when I use oils or acrylics.
